USA Mitchell Cancer Institute

Last fall, the Mitchell Cancer Institute at the University of South Alabama in Mobile opened a model facility that provides clinical care and cancer research under one roof. The design by international firm RMJM with CLA Architecture of Birmingham fosters interaction between researchers, physicians, patients and families to speed the advancement of medical discoveries from laboratories to clinical trials. In the lobby, glass allows patients to observe the researchers while researchers can see the patients their efforts help.

McKenzie Court

The $20 million Hope VI project to revitalize McKenzie Court has brought new life to the Tuscaloosa housing project. Old units were replaced with 256 apartments, a 10,000-square-foot community center, 2-acre green space with playground and pavilion, renovated gym and relocated branch library to be completed in 2010. The community center with zinc tiles and stratified brick banding won a 2009 AIA merit award for Birmingham’s Cohen Carnaggio Reynolds architects with Macknally Ross Land Design as consultant.

Tannehill Preserve

This Thornton Homes development near McCalla was built around a former golf course turned preserve, now protected by the Smokey Mountain National Land Trust. Tannehill Preserve ’s four neighborhoods are linked by paved trails winding through the 82-acre park. Inspired by NYC’s Central Park, the preserve’s rolling hills are laced with seven lakes and a creek. Nimrod Long & Associates of Birmingham was a consultant on the project.

Fort Toulouse/Jackson Master Plan 76

HKW Architects and Macknally Ross Land Design , both of Birmingham, are working with the Alabama Historical Commission on a site analysis and comprehensive master plan for Fort Toulouse/Fort Jackson National Historic Park. The 170-acre park near Wetumpka at the convergence of the Tallapoosa and Coosa rivers is rich in archeological and historical significance. It was the site of a Creek settlement, as well as French and English forts, and a stop on naturalist William Bartram’s travels.

Jefferson County Eastern Health Center

The 4,500-square-foot Eastern Health Center in Birmingham, built with sustainable and recycled materials, employed energy efficient systems and products from light sensors to waterless toilets. The project by Designform of Birmingham garnered honorable mention in the 2009 AIA awards. To complement the environmental- and health-friendly aspects of the $7.7 million clinic, an adjacent 3.8-acre ‘ecoscape’ with gardens and trails was built by the Southern Environmental Center of Birmingham Southern University.
